ROLLING THE

TUSKEGEE AIRMEN

INTO THE

AMERICAN CAR CULTURE

HONORING THE NATION'S FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN

MILITARY AVIATORS IN A NON TRADITIONAL WAY

“Red Tails” was the nickname given to the 332nd Fighter Group of World War II. It was done so, because the tails of their P-47 Thunderbolt fighter planes (June 1944) and then, their P-51 Mustang fighter planes (July 1944) were painted RED, for aerial identification by the bomber groups that were being escorted by the 15th Air Force.

15th Air Force

Each of the 15th Air Force’s seven (7) fighter groups were designated with a specific color for identification purposes. For example, the 52nd Fighter Group had Yellow tails, the 325th had checkerboard Yellow & Black tails and the 31st had striped tails.

Eventually, because of their admirable, dedicated, disciplined and award-winning performances, the 332nd Fighter Group fondly became known as the “Red-Tailed Angels” by the bomber groups, who felt so comfortable with their committed and disciplined service that they actually began to request them.

Detroit RedTail, Inc is a mobile Tuskegee Airmen

tribute and educational outreach resource

Our mobile resource is a customized 2011 Ford Mustang, wrapped to emulate the "Red Tailed" P-51 Mustang fighter plane flown by the 332nd Fighter Group. On it, we honor Detroit based Documented Original Tuskegee Airmen(DOTA) and two (2) of the last remaining single engine fighter pilots that served in combat; retired LtCol's Harry T Stewart, Jr and Alexander Jefferson

Under the hood, we summarize the “pinnacle” of their time in combat, outline the single engine planes they flew, discuss the 1949 Gunnery Meet, introduce the 477th Bombardment Group and timeline Heroes in Black Aviation History.”
